Oatmeal’s role in skin care

by Amy

Oatmeal has been used for centuries (likely, millenia) on our skin. It’s well know for its anti inflammatory properties, which soothe the worst irritated skin. From simple dry skin, to psoriasis, and every problem in between, oatmeal can usually help alleviate some or all of the discomfort associated with uncomfortable (or worse, painful), inflamed skin.

Additionally, oatmeal contains saponins, which are glucosides (basically – sugars) with cleansing characteristics. Just a plain oatmeal bath is suitable, and even preferable, for the most delicate and sensitive skin – very young babies, and the elderly to clean, soothe, moisturize, and protect.

So it should come as no surprise that since very early on – some of those first batches made – we’ve incorporated oatmeal into our soaps, and our customers love it. Every single bar we sell can be considered an “oatmeal soap,” and for 2017, we’ve modified our soaping formulas to double the amount of oatmeal in every bar. In the case of oatmeal, you can never have too much.

We’ve upped the quality more by sourcing locally grown and processed, organic alberta oatmeal. Because not everyone loves a scrubby soap, we opted to use whole ground oatmeal, allowing the bars to contain a maximum amount of benefit while keeping the bar smoother.

For the most gentle of soaps, check our our Original Unscented Handmade Soap. It is our basic formula that most of the rest of our soaps are built from, and contains no colours, essential oils, or fragrance oils.
