It’s amazing how fast kids grow. All kids. But chicks, they almost literally change every time you look at them. The chicks are about 5 weeks old, we’ve had them almost a month, and they’ve already moved passed the adorable chick stage, through the awkward molting era, and now look like small chickens. We’re not sure yet how many are female but they’ll eventually let us know by laying eggs or crowing!
Chickens start laying between 4-5 months old so we have some time yet to finish their coop. We still need to add insulated inner OSB walls and build (and install) their nesting boxes. This week’s project is to make the bucket waterer using another UFA bucket and these nipples. Their little waterer gets so messy and only holds enough for a day, so it’ll be nice to not have to fill it every morning.
We thankfully have been getting lots and lots of rain that has lowered the fire risk significantly which means I spent our May Long Weekend longingly gazing at the garden and greenhouse, but at least we didn’t get the massive dump of snow that used to come with the holiday.
