I, for one, am glad we live so far north during this extended North American heatwave. It’s still miserably hot during the day, but as soon as the sun goes down, it cools off quickly, making sleep possible, and we end up with a few hours of really comfortable temperatures in the mornings to get outdoor chores done. The garden and greenhouse are (mostly) loving the heat, but the greenhouse is seeing temps at or above 40c and I think the slicing tomatoes don’t love it like the cucumbers do. This morning, I pinched off all the tomato flowers this once to allow them all to grow a bit more.
My lettuce seed packets accidently got soaked and then started to sprout, so I just threw them in the ground to see what we get, to explain what’s going on there. It’s pretty to look at, at least!
Something I realized this week is that our well water’s iron concentration has significantly increased – 15-30 seconds of running raw/untreated water over my hands stained them orange, and I have to wonder if that’s partly the cause of my unhappy tomatoes. We have a complicated filter system in the house that takes out almost all the nasty stuff so we aren’t exposed to the raw water often. I haven’t seen it this bad ever, so I think it’s time to get the well checked out (water tested, water levels checked, etc).
