He’s not the “Number One” (best) rooster (that we know of, yet), just the first one to start crowing (err, sort of – you’ll know what I mean when you listen to the video) and make it known he’s not going to be giving us any eggs. I suspect we’ve got 6 or so roosters among our BYM (Barn Yard Mix) of 20 chickens, now about 2.5 months old, but it might be another couple months before we know for sure, with crowing and egg laying being the most obvious indicators of sex.
His coloring is also changing from pure black (with green iridescent shimmer) – I’m kind of sad about that, he was really lovely! If we decide to keep any roosters, we care more about attitude than looks… but that green shimmer is just gorgeous.
